Oats - For a Calming Effect on the Body

(Mar-29-2004)

Perhaps when the word oats comes to mind, most of us think of Oats Porridge, which has graced many breakfast tables in Jamaica for years. However Oats, has curative properties. It is a nerve tonic and antidepressant that has a nourishing, calming and soothing effect on internal tissues. It also promotes speedy healing of cuts and wounds on the skin. Oats is a good diuretic when it is boiled in water for 15 minutes and two to three cups are taken daily. This same boiled liquid can help those who have difficulty in urinating. Poultices prepared with rolled oatmeal can alleviate skin afflictions such as itching brought on by eczema. The bran of the wheat also helps control cholesterol level.

As a porridge in Jamaica adults and children enjoy it. It is a first food for babies, although it is not as popular as our own cornmeal porridge. However, many people do not have it as porridge. They blend it with other ingredients such as milk, vanilla and stout and drink it as an energizer. Usually the men delight in this drink.

The oats plant.

This is one of the main reasons nutritionists recommend a daily diet including oats. It is really a palatable cereal when properly done with milk and spices. It is also a popular cereal around the world. The oatmeal, which carries the scientific name Avena Sativa, has many uses, but the only usable part of the plant that can be consumed is the raw grain. It is very nutritious as it contains iron, potassium, calcium, and Vitamin B among other nutrients.
